Kandinsky was initially as a lawyer at the University of Moscow. In 1896 he moved to Munich in Germany. There he studied two years at the Anton-Azbe school and then at the Academy of Fine Arts. Kandinsky was one of the founders of the artists' group Phalanx and founded one year after the Phalanx-Malschule on. One of the students, Gabriele Münter was his life.
Blaue Reiter In 1909 he founded with his friend Alexej von Jawlensky Neue Künstlergemeinschaft Munich. After one year he left the group, however, and founded in 1911 with the artists Franz Marc, Der Blaue Reiter, named after an earlier equestrian painting by Kandinsky and the love of horses by Franz Marc, the color blue they both loved. Der Blaue Reiter was also the name of the almanac published by this group. In 1912 appeared in two consecutive editions are important essay Über das in der Kunst Geistigen.
Abstract art In Murnau, where Gabriele Münter lived, in 1910 he would have discovered the abstract painting, following a reverse of his figurative works. "... I found myself unexpectedly in a painting by an overwhelming indescribable beauty. Amazed I stood, fascinated by this work ... The painting was not an issue, it found no recognizable object, it was exclusively composed of luminous color stains ... " he said. In Murnau, the impact of the Fauvists clearly at work. In 1905 they had for the first time as a group exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, where Kandinsky had taken part. An example of this influence is the painting "Murnau Kohl Gruber Strasse" in 1908.
Opinions about the emergence of abstract art walk somewhat apart. It was the "Disques simultanes" Robert Delaunay of the French, or the musical paintings of the Czech Kupka, Kasimir exercises or geometric or abstract Malewitsj processus which Mondrian embarked, the revolutionary step towards the abstraction up? Or was it anyway Mikhail Larionov with his "Rayon Ethics" of 1907? And finally, do not we lose sight that his Cézanne "Sainte Victoire" starting at 1885 Monet and his "Nymphéas" from 1890 to color only the abstract had. Certainly the then 20-year-old student Kandinsky already in 1886 the color rule in the old Russian icons had observed and that, nine years later, at an exhibition in Moscow, in admiration was for the painting "Corn heap" by Claude Monet, in which he wondered "... why would the emancipation of color can not coexist with the liberation of the form ?...". A "Improvisation" watercolor by him in 1910, heralded the really abstract art.
Kandinsky was inspired by music and particularly the atonal music of Arnold Schoenberg. In Über das in der Kunst Geistigen Kandinsky suggested that color and sound psychological effects on the human soul. He suggested a sound theory that a major influence on the development of twentieth-century art. According to Kandinsky speaks every color one's own language with its own expression and is in every color and shape a soul. Different colors will be an inner experience together to bring the viewer. The different sounds in music, which together form a harmonious whole, will be an inner experience to awaken the listener. This powerful effect that color and sound on the human psyche, he calls "inner sound" or "seelische Vibration.
Bauhaus At the outbreak of World War turned Kandinsky returned to Moscow. He was a teacher and married there in 1917 with Nina Andrejevski. His bride was 16, he was 50. Gabriele was his girlfriend stayed in Murnau. She would die in 1962. She had a painting by Kandinsky have kept a portrait of her in a mauve dress, when she was 27 years. It was their favorite color was.
After the war he returned to Germany in 1922 and became a professor at the Bauhaus in Weimar, which Paul Klee was already connected. Here began the most productive period in Kandinsky's life. He himself called it "the time, characterized by a lyrical geometrisme. When the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925, he performed the same function. As late as 1922 he realized the Jurifreie Art Exhibition in Berlin a monumental backdrop to the four walls of the Salon. This work was reconstructed at the National Museum of Modern Art (Mnam) of Paris, in 1977.
In 1924, he and Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee and Alexej von Jawlensky yet another artists' group "Die Blauen Vier".
Besides many of his theoretical concepts in the "Bauhaus Bücher" appearance, he also works from his "Punkt und Linie zu Fläche", published in 1926.
At the International Exhibition of Architecture in Berlin in 1931, he created the large wall panels in ceramic in the music room in the Mies van der Rohe house.
Last years Kandinsky in 1928 acquired the German nationality, but in 1933 he had to leave Germany, like Paul Klee. Bauhaus that year was transferred to Berlin, was the same year by the Gestapo closed. He came to Paris, where he took French citizenship and went with Nina in Neuilly-sur-Seine live.
